Housing Authorities

Mission

The Public Housing Authority provides high-quality, well-managed, and affordable housing. It also provides economic self-sufficiency and better quality of life.

How to Apply

To apply you must go to the main office or call for an application. You must sign a release form to allow the Housing Authority to run a background check. There is also a credit check for anyone that applies. After the background and credit check you will be offered an apartment or put on a waiting list.

Income Limits

Your income can not exceed certain amounts to be eligible for public housing.

Section 8 Housing

Section 8 is a rental assistance program and is tenant-based. Once the client finds a place to live, the housing authority has to inspect and approve the place. The client pays 1/3 of their monthly income, for the rent, directly to the landlord, the housing authority pays the rest. There are rent limits based on the number of bedrooms.

Shelter + Care

Shelter + Care is designed to aid seriously mentally ill patients in finding permanent housing. You must also be a client of the Western Montana Mental Health Center.

Family Self-Sufficiency

Family Self-Sufficiency is used to help families achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. If you decide to become a participant you must sign a five-year contract that defines the goals and objectives that must be fulfilled by the family. Families that have earned an income can have a savings account for the family. After the goals are met they can use the savings for any purpose.

Public Housing Drug Elimination Program

Tenants of the Public Housing Authority are trained in security measures. The patrol the housing authority properties looking for criminal activity. They are only allowed to report a problem. The funds from the Public Housing Drug Elimination Program are used to pay for extra police patrols. An activity of this program is a Character Counts class.

These Housing Authorities may have public housing units, project based units and vouchers.
